What is BioThane?
Share
BioThane® is the brand name of a PVC coated waterproof webbing developed by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp. It is an incredibly durable material. The tensile strength comes from the polyester webbing inside, and it is latex free!
One of the most exciting reasons to choose BioThane® for your pet products is because the material is WATERPROOF and STINK-PROOF!
For dog owners, this is a huge game changer. It means no more wet-dog smell after a summer at the lake. No long-term doggy smell from everyday wear. And when your pal decides to do as his ancestors did and roll in something unimaginable, you can wash your BioThane gear with soap and water and even sterilize it with a dab of rubbing alcohol. Under normal use, BioThane will outlast nylon and leather products. Ensuring your gear will last much longer—which over time, is better for the environment!
BioThane® is manufactured in North Ridgeville, Ohio in the USA—the only plant to produce authentic BioThane® brand webbing.
Why is BioThane® better than leather?
BioThane® is more durable, stronger, and easier to maintain and 100% washable! It comes in a rainbow of vibrant and earthy colours. BioThane is a form of vegan leather—which means no cows were harmed in the making of the product, and it does not impact deforestation for farmlands to house bovine! One more reason we consider it the sustainable choice.
Will the colour fade?
The opaque colors tend to hold colour longer than the fluorescent colors. In general, the deeper the shade of the hue, the longer it will last.
Will colours "bleed" or transfer onto other surfaces like fur, hair, skin, or fabric?
It is possible for certain colours, especially fluorescents to transfer onto fur, hair, skin, or fabric. These colours are not hazardous, and they should not present a health or safety hazard. If colour transfer happens, wash with soap and water. If irritation persists, get medical attention. For additional product information, please click here.
Will it work in cold weather?
Yes. BioThane remains flexible and durable in cold weather. It’s waterproof too, so feel free to play all winter in the snow and ice. It is also stink-proof and will dry quickly when hung or laid flat to dry.
Does it get sticky or tacky?
Under normal use it will not get sticky or tacky. It can get sticky or tacky if it is exposed to certain chemicals like DEET. So be sure to avoid liberal contact with the product when wearing bug spray. Avoid using it on your hands, if possible, while using BioThane leashes, etc.
What products can be used to disinfect BioThane?
We recommend the following to disinfect (choose ONE of the following):
- 10% bleach solution (take the bleach out of the bottle, at 6.5% active ingredient, and dilute 1 part to 9 parts water)
- Envirocide (follow directions on bottle).*
