FAQ

MATERIAL & HARDWARE

Is it strong enough for my dog?

All our products are made with authentic BioThane Beta 520 webbing. Beta webbing has a 1,000 lb. per inch of width break strength. We try our best to source heavy-duty and durable hardware that will withstand great amounts of weight and pressure under normal circumstances.

Are your products chew proof?

Our products are NOT chew-proof and not meant to withstand your dog chewing, tugging, or carrying a leash or collar. Damage caused by chewing is not covered under our 1-Year Limited Warranty.

Is the material safe for my pet?

BioThane is a PVC rubber product that is antimicrobial. It will not hold odours and can be washed easily. It is fast drying as well, so dogs prone to hot spots from swimming are less likely to develop them when wearing our collars as they do not harbour as much bacteria as fabric alternatives. PVC is considered safe and non-toxic, and so far, we have not had any issues of allergies.

Does it get really hot in the sun? / Will it make my dog hot?

BioThane is a PVC rubber, so leaving it in full sun will make it hot. Direct sunlight over a prolonged period can also fade the colour. Under normal circumstances, the collars will not make your dog hot, however if the temperature is too hot for the collar, it is too hot for your dog. It is easy for dogs to overheat in warm weather so please keep your dog indoors or out of direct sun during very hot days.

Will the BioThane material make my dog sweat?

Dogs only secrete sweat from their feet and nose, unlike humans, they don’t sweat all over their body to cool down (although they do release sweat from apocrine glands which releases pheromones that help dogs identify one another). A dog’s main source of cooling down is through panting. So, the answer is no, our collars will not make your dog sweat. What you might notice is dirt and natural oils from their skin that is likely to coat the collar after regular wear, which can easily be washed clean with our care instructions.

What is BioThane?

BioThane® is the brand name of a PVC coated waterproof webbing developed by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp. It is an incredibly durable material. The tensile strength comes from the polyester webbing inside, and it is latex free!

One of the most exciting reasons to choose BioThane® for your pet products is because the material is WATERPROOF and STINK-PROOF!

For dog owners, this is a huge game changer. It means no more wet-dog smell after a summer at the lake. No long-term doggy smell from everyday wear. And when your pal decides to do as his ancestors did and roll in something unimaginable, you can wash your BioThane gear with soap and water and even sterilize it with a dab of rubbing alcohol. Under normal use, BioThane will outlast nylon and leather products. Ensuring your gear will last much longer—which over time, is better for the environment!

BioThane® is manufactured in North Ridgeville, Ohio in the USA—the only plant to produce authentic BioThane® brand webbing.

FAQ

BIOTHANE

Why is BioThane® better than leather?

BioThane® is more durable, stronger, and easier to maintain and 100% washable! It comes in a rainbow of vibrant and earthy colours. BioThane is a form of vegan leather—which means no cows were harmed in the making of the product, and it does not impact deforestation for farmlands to house bovine! One more reason we consider it the sustainable choice.

Will the colour fade?

The opaque colors tend to hold colour longer than the fluorescent colors. In general, the deeper the shade of the hue, the longer it will last.

Will colours "bleed" or transfer onto other surfaces like fur, hair, skin, or fabric?

It is possible for certain colours, especially fluorescents to transfer onto fur, hair, skin, or fabric. These colours are not hazardous, and they should not present a health or safety hazard.  If colour transfer happens, wash with soap and water. If irritation persists, get medical attention.  For additional product information, please click here.

Will it work in cold weather?

Yes. BioThane remains flexible and durable in cold weather. It’s waterproof too, so feel free to play all winter in the snow and ice. It is also stink-proof and will dry quickly when hung or laid flat to dry.

Does it get sticky or tacky?

Under normal use it will not get sticky or tacky. It can get sticky or tacky if it is exposed to certain chemicals like DEET. So be sure to avoid liberal contact with the product when wearing bug spray. Avoid using it on your hands, if possible, while using BioThane leashes, etc.

What products can be used to disinfect BioThane?

We recommend the following to disinfect (choose ONE of the following):

  1. 10% bleach solution (take the bleach out of the bottle, at 6.5% active ingredient, and dilute 1 part to 9 parts water)
  2. Envirocide (follow directions on bottle).*
  3. Cavicide (follow directions on bottle).*

*We do not specifically endorse the effectiveness of these products only that they will not harm BioThane® in proper use. For additional information on Envirocide please visit http://www.metrex.com/products/surface-disinfectants/envirocide or for additional information on Cavicide please visit http://www.metrex.com/products/surface-disinfectants/cavicide.
